In ancient times, shoes started out as sandals to protect our ancestors' feet in the wild. In colder places however, a covering not only from below the feet were needed. This is when ancient man started cutting out animal hide as a covering for their sandals. These later on evolved to shoes -the ones that we have today. 

They come in many forms now, unlike the simple, rather rudimentary ones our ancestors had before. Nice shoes were used only by royals but as we progressed, shoes have become a staple for every closet.
